HEALTHY SUMMER TRAVEL TIPS: Minimize your risks

Every year, we look forward to the summertime for camping, barbecues, fireworks and vacation travel. The season, however, can also bring illness. There are things that people can do to minimize the risk for health problems related to summer travel. Knowing what to pack when traveling could keep your family healthy and safe.

If you're traveling out of the country this summer, there are a few things to consider. Think about whether you need any special vaccinations or medications to travel to your destination. If so, it is a good idea to get them four to six weeks before you travel. If it is less than four weeks until you travel, make it a point to talk to your physician or pharmacist. You may find that there are still things that you can do to prevent illnesses on your trip. For example, adults 18 years and older can take daily bismuth subsalicylate while traveling to prevent travelers' diarrhea. Other preventative measures to practice while visiting foreign countries include avoiding raw fruit and vegetables, boiling drinking water, and using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Following these tips before you hop on that plane might make this not only a summer of sun, but also a summer of fun!
